Under Ex-Googler CEO, LiveJournal Gets A Revamp, Promises New Services, Apps And More In 2014

LiveJournal wants to matter again, and is making a number of changes over the course of 2014 which the company hopes will make it a more relevant social networking destination, starting with a major revamp of its homepage and user interface, rolled out into beta just yesterday. On the horizon, the company is also promising several new services as well as new mobile apps, in an overarching vision that sounds as if it wants to find a new niche for itself as something of a competitor to Medium.

Though LiveJournal isn’t interested in specifically detailing these new services today, the company would say that they’re designed to help bloggers “highlight their best content and amazing writing,” plus help readers better network, and bring “location aspects into long form.” In other words, a lot like the modern blogging platform Medium.

Plus, the company isn’t beyond stretching into other, not as social areas, too. For example, it’s also exploring the idea of helping users run e-commerce shops on its site – something that many of its users in Singapore do today.

Medium has all that "mind share" from the Twitter guy, tons of VC money. I bet LJ wants some of that.

Really interesting. I wondered what the change in looks was about. I hope this means our LJ will still be around for a few more years.

Me too, of course! But they didn't really talk about the conversation that the LJ design allows.

All I care about at the moment is that they fix whatever it is about livejournal.net's scripts that keeps the pages loading and loading and loading. I've had to forbid livejournal.net but that buggers up the layout.

I thought it was just me! Glad to know I'm not the only one.

I did a bit of googling after it started and found a couple of LJ threads with suggestions on how to fix it but none of them worked for me apart from disabling livejournal.net's scripts. The responses by LJ to support requests have been equally fruitless - disabling add-ons and disabling adblock being the main ones. It doesn't happen on Chrome.

Huh, I don't have that problem, but I have all sorts of stuff disabled and can't keep track any more.

It's just some of us, but isn't that always the way with LJ?

I suppose we can only hope that with someone new at the helm the changes are slightly better and more purposeful than the garbage we've had in the past.

Personally I'm just happy to see them specifically address what's going on in Russia. I don't care who owns it, as long as they don't kowtow to Putin.

I find it particularly interesting how they're marketing long-form content as a niche market, which is how they've always been; I guess it's an example of "wait long enough and things will circle back around".

There are advantages to having the servers outside of both Russia and the US though.

Very true. Matt was telling me I should get away from LJ asap, until I told him the servers aren't actually in Russia.

I loathe the new layout. I have kept the old one until they force me to use the new "concept." It seems to me that they want ALL aspects of all social media platforms, and they do none of them well. I hope this means that they pick the poison that DOES work well for them (coughcough), although sadly, I don't think that will bring in the ad dollars that they want.

A fairly painful start -- I almost always crosspost from Dreamwidth and read in a custom style so have avoided the changes so far, but that can't last forever.
