In Mild Defense of the New Delicious

« previous entry | next entry »

mood: resigned

The old Delicious was built on old (2000s) technology held together with spit and duct tape. The new owners had to start over, and that's difficult, so features that most people didn't use were undoubtedly too expensive to include, at least in the first release.

I miss the features too (like bundles and 100 bookmarks per page), but remember, it's the first release, and it's a free service.

It's also sad that all those people didn't opt in to transfer their accounts, so their bookmarks disappeared. Not AVOS's fault though: the old TOS was written such that users could control our own data, which is generally a good thing. But here it bit us in the ass. Sigh.

ETA: via [personal profile] cleolinda and [twitter.com profile] brewsternorth Apparently any tag w / in it parses out and is no longer seen. Which means D/s overnight falls from fannish use. *sigh*

ETA2: as of September 28, delicious fixed the slash problem and some of the others

I use your delicious all the time searching for fic (because you're basically the most diligent link collector out there), this'll be weird to get used to.

I'll still be there, I'll just spread the links to diigo and pinboard and wherever.

Glad they are useful!

I have a question that you might have an answer for. Most of my tags are gone, but they're still on my firefox thingy (I have no clue how to call that in English, sorrry) that I installed when I got my delicious account. Is there any way I could save all of those links? I'm scared that I might lose them if the firefox thingy somehow synchs with my delicous account D:

From my poking around my own account, my tags are all still there, just not displayed. Search your own account for a specific tag you don't see displayed.

I know they were fixing stuff today, so maybe your tags are back.

The Firefox Organize Bookmarks window has an option to back up bookmarks and to export them as HTML (it's one of the weird icons in the top of the window). I'd do both kinds of export.

Thank you for your reply. I managed to export my booksmarks from Firefox and import them to pinboard. I highly doubt that I will use Delicious again. It brought so much stress, anger and sadness to fandoms over the last few days. Ugh.

Honestly, I think there needs to be a GIANT step back taken by most of fandom. What we have here is a beta-test, even if they're not calling it that. Bugs, warts, and all.

Absolutely, it's an unexpected beta version and they screwed up by pretending it wasn't.

Yeah, they should have been open about the fact that it would be buggy instead of touting the new features so hard. But they've already fixed the / and other special characters, the login issues, the not-enough-tags showing on the main page, the no summaries showing on search results, no extra tags showing when you search a single tag, mutli-term search... that's about half of the OMG DOOM list fandom compiled in, what, less than 48 hours?

Yeah, better than some, like Google Docs last year, so there's some hope.

Happy to reduce anyone's stress. I think they'll restore most of the functionality, they added the slash to tags already.

I'm OK, hope you are having a better year.

I didn't use delicious fannishly at all, and was okay enough to lose my (under 100, I think) personal bookmarks that I didn't bother signing up again under the new TOS and etc, and while I understand people's frustration—if not really the OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING reaction—like you said, first release, free service. Everything may iron out, and if it doesn't, well, people will find a way, as they tend to do.

I respect fannish passion, but find that I am sanguine (on a good day) and affectless (on a bad day).

The removal of the / in a tag has really messed up the way I use(d) the site... hope they can fix that!!
