reading, a book!

mood: confused

I've been shy lately, reading but not posting. But here I go.

Anyone want to talk about Connie Willis's All Clear? I read the first half and I'm a bit weirded out by the constant refrain of Polly's time-travel paradox stress, and her lying. And because it's Willis, and she is rigorous, there might not be a happy ending. Anyone have Thoughts?

I have Thoughts. When you say you've read the first half, do you mean only half of All Clear? If so I should wait till you've finished it to share my Thoughts because I don't know, having read it, how far the ending is informing what I would say. If you know what I mean. But feel free to share more of your Thoughts!

(I'm hanging out for someone to write some All Clear fic...)

I just... I'm not all that sympathetic to what I see as Polly's somewhat selfish fear (there were people dying around her every day), partly because it's so constant. And how she keeps lying to Eileen and Mike, to spare their feelings, even after they figure it out. It feels like "tell" rather than "show". I want the rest of the story: how she went to work every day, more about the plays, driving the ambulance, rescuing people. Not yet more chasing about streets and hospitals and a burning St. Paul's trying to find Bartholomew or whatever his name is.

Please tell me it gets better?
