absolutefiction is not herself any more

mood: sad

absolutefiction deleted and purged her journal, and now someone entirely different is using the account name. When she deleted, her old comments were auto-converted to ex_absolutef238, but not links to the journal. Which makes some of our posts & comments really weird. I wanted to give her credit for an icon, and it makes me sad.

I knew that the comments of deleted journals were being converted to a new ex-account name like you said here, but I guess I never gave a thought to what happens when the account name itself is mentioned in old posts and comments. Hm, to be honest, I don't see a way for LJ to handle it differently, other than a database-wide search of all content, posts and comments, for the purged account names and replacing them with the newly assigned names, and I don't think that's feasible.

well, they do that with the comments, (probably just a redirect on user ID). I wish they'd do it for the user links before allowing someone else to take the name.

So many people in LOTRips fandom have changed their names or deleted that I honestly have no idea who's who anymore, or if new people are really old people and I missed a memo. It's very confusing.

I don't think I've run into anyone who is using a name someone else used to have. Then again, I'm sort of a hermit these days.

I'm a hermit in RL, but not so much online...

There's something sort of sad and sobering about all this; it reminds us that virtual friends can be as ephemeral as smoke. But a rose by any other name, you know. I hope she sees your post so that she knows we're thinking about her.

I cling a bit to the past, and am saving more copies of things than ever. But RL people disappear too, so there's no telling :-(

I think that this 'pick up a deleted username' idea is really confusing. I don't know the previous absolutefiction well, but I recognised her name. It would be pretty weird looking for her stuff to find this new person's entries.
I hope nobody picks up Ismenin after my days. I still want to be me, even if I'm dead. :D xxx

Dead they can handle -- one emails the admins for "memorial" journal status. It's deleted and purged that gets messed up :-(

Okay! Guess my stuff's safe as long as my friends remember to do it. :D

She was one of my best fandom friends -- it's kind of creepy to know that someone else is using her old name.

That's weird and very confusing. It's sad to see so many people disappearing or changing their names. Oh for the good old days...

IIRC, she'd deleted and come back several times, so it's not that surprising, more depressing.

Yes, I see what you mean.

But, good grief, that makes me feel quite stable.
