mood: angry

Amazon has just re-defined pretty much every book in their Gay and Lesbian section as "adult" and removed their "sales rank" and listings in the bestseller lists. As though their existence is too scary for children. I'm a mom, gay is just a word for some of our relatives: how dare Amazon try to make them disappear?

This is just wrong and stupid. One author of a non-explicit gay YA book, markprobst, got this explanation
In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller listas. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.
For more WTF? see the list of suppressed books, including Brokeback Mountain, Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story, Tipping the Velvet, Heather Has Two Mommies, and Challenging Homophoba: Teaching About Sexual Diversity.

Not affected: heterosexual novels including violent rape and/or explicit rape (Laurel Hamilton, etc.) And their featured blog of the day includes a trailer for the video game Terminator:Salvation (rated teen). So it's clearly not violence they're worried about.

What to do: use the word #amazonfail on Twitter and blogs, at the very least. Link to the smartbitches redefinition of Amazon Rank. Gosh, Amazon has some blogswith comments enabled. We could... comment.

laurell k. hamilton's books aren't just violent -- they're very heavy* on the incredibly explicit, poor choice of lube, partner-hopping, no strings attached sex. you know the kind that might actually be awkward to explain to a bright 8-10 year old who gets their hands on one of the books? but it's all heterosexual (to the point where a couple of characters who were initially identified as bi or gay saw the power of the deep heterosexual dicking and have converted, yippee), so that's okay!

*by very heavy, i mean that the entire premise of the meredith gentry series is that the main character has to get pregnant with an heir asap, so in between fighting supernatural bad guys she fucks her way through the entire male population of faerie. even anita blake, who started her series as a good girl who didn't give it up outside marriage, has somehow (i threw one of the books against a wall when liquid soap was used for lube in a shower scene and haven't gone back, so idk exactly how) become infected with a supernatural force that means she literally has to fuck or die.

What to do: Boycott their services, and tell them precisely why you're doing it. NOTHING scares a corporate behemoth more than losing revenue.

Good point! And if they don't roll it back or come up with some kind of fix by morning Pacific Time, I will!

Thanks, I've noted that in an ETA. But we can plan to boycott and tell them precisely why we're doing it
