Zune programmers were dumb

Whoever it was on my friends page that has a Zune -- it's not just yours.

Microsoft programmers apparently forgot that a year can be longer than 365 days, on a Leap Year. Like 2008. So all the Zunes froze.

PC world says that the fix is to drain the battery and then plug the Zune in again. Go to Zune.net/support for more details.

This does not quite achieve NASA's Mars probe failure because one group used metric and the other used American measurements. But it comes damned close.

Yeah, they're all fine now. Timing just sucked for me. Normally, I never let mine go to sleep - just my bad luck it rebooted while I was on vacation

Way to go, Microsoft. That's right up there with misspelling the company name on the box.

I have a little sympathy because I was once a Project Manager, and it's the little things that bite ya in the ass. But honestly, someone should have caught it.

I'm just reminded of all the stuff we did 10 years ago for Y2K compliance. You'd think anyone who was alive and adult back then (or even a teenager) would think "do the dates work?" as a basic consideration of programming. But maybe not.

I heard this, but mine is fine. I did charge it today though, so maybe that has something to do with it.

As far as I can tell, they froze for the 366th day of the year, and then when the calendar turned over to the first day, they were OK.

Wow, what a failure of marketing, if an internet-savvy power user like you can't even figure out wtf it is! (Microsoft iPod competitor)

It's pretty damn funny.

I saw the code, they screwed up by not setting a variable like DaysOfYear to 366 on leap years, which they could then test for the variable, instead of testing for 365 and then checking for a leap year, about six different places, and screwing up in one of them. This is so basic, so fundamental to programming, that it's really mind-boggling. Now, I do understand project management, and time pressures and OMG MUST SHIP, and putting any warm body to work writing the simple stuff. But this is so ridiculous that any decent code review would have sent it back to be fixed, and pretty much any QA should have found the bug. So obviously they completely missed the boat there. Way to Fail, Microsoft.
