catching up on happies

mood: meh

  1. The weather here has been cold (for us thinblooded types) but clear and gorgeous.

  2. Crossing things off lists! I found my list from Monday and I've done everything on it :-)

  3. Being used to my bifocals. I'm mostly nearsighted so I wear glasses all the time. But suddenly last spring, I couldn't read things about ten inches away, even with my glasses on, so I suddenly started bringing things close to my face, looking over my glasses. Hence: bifocals. I chose badly, they are not pretty, but it is nice to see properly.

  4. Synonyms for penis at etymoline.com. Please note that the synonym "cock" is attested since 1618, "pillicock" c. 1300 and "dick" only since 1891. I don't remember which Medieval AU I was reading that used "dick", but it sounded really weird to me. And now I sit smugly knowing I was right :-)

'Cock' is probably much older than that. The subject came up once on Teasel's journal and I found a late medieval example. Darned if I can remember what it was. 'Dick' drives me nuts.

I agree, didn't Chaucer make at least one horrible pun on the word "cock"?

There's the bit about Chauntecleer: And every night he percheth him/In mine lady's chaumber. There's also 'I have a Gentil Cok.' You can read a useful analysis of this text in 'Fowl Play in my Lady's Chamber' in Jan M. Ziolkowski's Obscenity. It's in Google Books.

    1. clear and sunny and above zero here today after a miserably cold few days. :)

    2. done... everything... on... it...? this does not compute. ;)

    3. i think i'm right behind you on the bifocals, and am not happy about it. i have been severely nearsighted for longer than my memory goes back. i was hoping for a bit of a break when i got old. *pouts*

    4. ok, too fun: pencil, arbor vitae, carumba, and pud? lol. also please note that the word 'fuck' finally reappeared in english dictionaries in 1965, which was a very good year for new appearances (i'm 43). *g*

    1. Yeah, it got down to freezing here. We have pathetic insulation. I resolve to get insulated window coverings, this year, finally.

    2. It was a subset of the List From Hell. see #1, above

    3. I was hoping for a break on the farsighted bits, but noooo. My eyesight went to pot all of a sudden, but it was seven years after one optometrist thought it would...

    4. How I love the online etymology site!

Thank you for the link in para 4 - very interesting, I knew that Middle English had a variety of colourful words, but I didn't know that "penis" itself was of such recent origin.

I am dreading having to get bifocals, but it can't be far off, my reading near-point has been receding steadily the last twelve months. *sigh*

I love etymology, such an intimate form of history.

Bifocals are better than the alternative. But wow, not cheap :-(

When you tweeted about the word 'dick' on Twitter, I was going to tweet back 'when in doubt, always reach for cock', but I became unexpectedly shy.

    Let ribaldry reign!

(My twits are locked, and I rejected Stephen Fry (how could I?) so as to make a dork of myself in private)

    You rejected Stephen Fry!!!

Mine are locked too, but I accepted Kate Hewlett and Imogen Heap. I haven't tried to follow Stephen yet. I figure, if they want to see the random dorkery of a random woman in Pennsylvania, why not?

I did reject him, because he seems to actually read the tweets, and I'd be too self-conscious.

It has been freezing here! Even with the sun out, its been barely a degree or two above zero.

Hey, I just want to be sure you got my email with the address. Can you let me know? : )

Yes, I'm so sorry, I keep meaning to mail you. I have to fix the RAM, it's trying to run in 128 MB and is painfully show. I'm sure there was more in there, so I have to fiddle around and see why it's not recognizing he RAM>

Ah, no worries. My mom was all, OMG you gave my address to some schmuck who's screwing you over! and I'm like, kay, calm the hell down, it's the holidays, shit happens, I'm sure she'll send it eventually. :D

Don't feel like you have to rush. I needed to get used to the idea of not having the internet at my beck and call anyway. Financing a car is gonna be the death of me.

They were oddly hard to write. I was out of meds for a couple of days and I think that affected me :-(
