I have reason to believe he may be some kind of fish

That quote is from Miranda Otto's Love Serenade, which is neither a comedy nor a romance, it's more of an oddly dark slice of life in small-town Australia. The three lead characters are all deeply flawed, which makes the story that much more interesting.

There was one spot where I could just tell that the director was a woman: during intercourse, Miranda's character got bored. I've never seen a sympathetic woman portrayed that way, just prostitutes and comically awful wives, checking their nails. She looked just the way I felt, wayyy back when I had selfish boyfriends.

I've seen this twice now on one of the digital cable movie channels (can't remember which) and it is a brilliant movie. It's hard to believe that just three or four years later that goofy, awkward and perhaps slightly touched girl would be playing a shield maiden of Rohan. It's a fabulous film.

Excellent acting, uncomfortable but interesting film. She's a good actor, and I wish she'd get some better parts. Cashmere Mafia, argh.

It's pretty obscure, Netflix didn't have it until this summer.

ROFL omg that movie was so Australian. Just in its whole pacing and writing and the random weird. I love our oddly dark cinema. *G* And Miranda was so awesome.

I think you're right, I don't know any US director, even an indie, who would have the guts to make them all so fucked-up. Even the suburban angst films like American Beauty seem softer.

*THAT* was Miranda Otto? Whoa. I saw this when it was first out (on video?) and was really freaked out by it. Such a bizarre story. It has really stuck in my head, though. Every scene is pretty much still clear. But, wow, I had no idea that was Miranda Otto.

I'm sure she'd be thrilled to know you didn't recognize her: it's a great compliment to her acting :-D
