LJ owner has no clue / One Day Content Strike March 21, GMT Midnight to Midnight

« previous entry | next entry »
Mar. 18th, 2008 | 11:41 pm
mood: enraged

The head of SUP (LJ's new Russian overlords), Anton Nosik, just does not understand a huge chunk of the LJ user base. He knows it would solve the problem if new accounts could step down to Basic status, but he won't do it because... he thinks: In a situation where people are trying to scare and blackmail us, threatening to destroy our business, there are business reasons for not rewarding such behaviour." WHAT A DUMBSHIT.

The correct response is, "Oops, we didn't think this through, we'll change it back and try a different process next time, to avoid mistakes like this."

(Also, he means extortion instead of blackmail unless someone has some real dirt on him.)darkrosetiger has the whole thing translated properly

And this is what is driving him crazy:
ONE DAY CONTENT STRIKE

For one day [Friday, March 21, midnight GMT to midnight], make no posts. Make no comments. Let there be NO new content added to LJ.

This will create a permanent downward spike in the daily-posts statistics, a permanent reminder of the power of the userbase. From the original boycott post.
Some of us might activate old accounts and do it there too. And there are, of course, icons and banners! And if you're not sure what your local time is compared to GMT, check right here.

On Friday, come see me over at Insane Journal -- I think my layout doesn't have any weird smily faces and Adblock takes care of the rest of it. And consider migrating to InsaneJournal yourself.

Thanks for the strike notice - not that it will be difficult for me, I'm frantically busy over the next few days. Would you mind if I steal your icon to use when I post about joining the strike?

I've had an IJ since Strikethrough 2007, but I have to admit that the limited (and horrible) layouts were a disincentive. They've obviously uploaded new ones since I last checked. I like yours - very peaceful and soothing. What is it called?

Yes, there's nothing like being dissed to make a person want to kick back!

It's not just the Basic Account thing, it's constant failure to communicate, treating us like eyeballs instead of people who make the network work!

Come to IJ...come to IJ... Squeaky has years to go (probably) before he gets sick of us... :)

Huh. I always took it as a friendly sort of "hey, we're all crazy here," not a mean-spirited swipe. But mileage varies, obviously. :)

It is a weird attitude, and I wish it would go away.

That's my major issue with IJ too. And not even necessarily disrespect toward mental illness, although that too, but just... it's really, really dumb. It comes across as dorky and immature and whatever all else. It's one thing if someone chooses to be that way in their own journal, even comes up with a weird, silly layout theme or whatever, but the idea of setting that as the default for the entire service really turns me off.

My publisher has a promotional community here and I ended up creating another LJ under my writerly pseud so I could participate there. It took some serious thought and a certain amount of angst before I did that, it being post-Strikethrough and all. But I can't even suggest to my publisher that they make an attempt to move over to IJ because, seriously, that's not the sort of place an actually business would want to be.

It's his service and he can do whatever he likes with it. And when it was just a few hundred people having fun, I'm sure it was cool. But as a candidate for the New Home for fandom, or even as a place other, non-fan people or groups might consider moving to, it's just an uncomfortable fit. I have a journal over there and I cross-post stuff from here, but I'm still hoping that at some point Squeaky will remodel the graphics and labelling of the site, even if the name stays the same. [crossed fingers]

I'm hoping that OTW or someone else will come up with a fandom-oriented social networking/ conferencing system and we'll mostly live happily ever after. But I'm not holding my breath.

This isn't directed at you personally but I really hope that people won't snark and huff and puff at those people that decide not to participate in this. I would hope not but there are some very angry people out there and I can see it dissolving into some seriously petty and stupid war between journals.

I'm starting to feel very pressured into participating since it's all over my flist and some people are being quite pushy about it in their posts. I'm still considering but most likely I will be keeping up my regular Friday LJ schedule. I don't think that anyone on my Flist would say anything should I choose not to participate but there may be people who end up participating even though they don't really want too...

I hope you don't think I'm pressuring you, because I'm not. It's something I intend to do because it makes a statement, but if you don't feel that way, that's fine with me. I won't unfriend you or anything.

No as I said at the start it wasn't directed at you. But some people are being fairly pushy about it and I'd hate to see people go after other people because they're just not interested in participating for whatever reason because I can bet that it will happen at some point somewhere...
