upcoming civic duty

I have Jury Duty this week. I postponed it twice so far this year: once I simply flaked and forgot all about it, once it was the week we were going to the mountains. So I'm to be at the courthouse 9 am tomorrow morning in downtown Oakland.

I can do that. It's the rest I'm not so sure of. I never bothered to get a disability assessment because I'm self employed. I just work less and earn less. So honestly don't know if I can physically handle a long week.

Jury duty is important, and I'd really like to do it if I could. Not so much for a high-profile trial, but just because it's part of what makes things work here, part of the checks and balances that keep judges (in this case) from having too much power. So we shall see.

I've gone in for jury duty three times, but have never been selected. If you do get selected, I hope it is a short trial and an interesting case.

It was really good to talk with you tonight. Call again, anytime.

Love you.

I like the thought of doing jury service and what it means to a democratic society, it's just the practicalities that flake me out a bit. Getting there, child care, staying awake. I have real trouble staying awake in the afternoon.

I hope it goes well and that you get an interesting case.

Thank you! It was over with relatively quick. I have been sleeping so badly, I hope that is the only reason I fell into bed when I came back.

I think you can do it. I've been lots of times, and the key is taking things to keep yourself occupied. (And layers to stay warm in case they refrigerate the hell out of the place.)

Mostly you sit around. Get there early for a choice of seats if where you sit makes a difference to how comfortable you are.

I'm not sure what the current rules on laptops/electronic devices are, but that might be a possibility. Or paperback books, or a small deck of playing cards if you like solitaire. Take snackies and plenty of water. Get up often and walk around (after all of the introduction/paperwork stuff is taken care of).

You'll do fine :)

*hugs*

All excellent advice, and I did pack most of those things (forgot water, but they had some). And then they let us out!
