miscellaneous fandom stuff

mood: cynical

I'm still boggling at the msscribe story - someone who was so desperate to be important in fandom that she lied like a rug, invented sockpuppets to persecute her and the people she wanted to be friends with, invented other sockpuppets to fangirl her, and attacked a woman with cancer, like a pitbull, to defend one of her friends. Oh and went around spouting accusations of racism. Icky. It's like crystalwank only worse, but my post on fandom and trust still applies.

In better news, Rowan Atkinson might be doing a new Blackadder series. Blackadder pushes close to the edge of my embarrassment humor squick, but it's still incredibly funny. The ditzy Queen Elizabeth I cracks me up, and "I have a cunning plan" is in frequent use in my household.

The Msscribe affair is truly the acme of LJ sociopathy. I was tuning out of HP around the time of Charitywank, and I remember thinking that if she (and others) could make even the most plausible plea for help sound bogus, then what would happen to those of us who truly need help? Real life is just the same, of course, but I would have to say that it's better to be taken advantage of now and again than to cease to trust altogether.

I hope it's the nadir! And yeah, I'd rather trust than not. But maybe a smaller group than All Of Fandom.

I still use quotes from Blackadder - I think so many of us do - and "I have a cunning plan" is one that's in constant use! As for Queenie, she was undoubtedly one of the best comic inventions ever, she really was. However, as with all these things of which I have fond memories, I'm not at all sure it should be revived, even as a one-off - it was funny then, it may not be funny now. It it ain't broke...

Good point. I hope if they do it, they don't screw it up.

Kind of makes Andre Schneider look like an amateur, doesn't she?

Actually, I find the whole thing depressing. Why people have to live these vicarious on-line lives as someone they are not.

Not sure I want a new Blackadder -the ending to the last series was just perfect. I remember being so shocked, jolted out of my laughter zone. I'd like to remember it finishing there forever.

That's a good point, but with lead actor and the scriptwriter on board, it could be really wonderful.

I tend to overthink and come up with complicated ideas that involve triangulation and "while we're there", so yeah, I now warn for A Cunning Plan.

whereas we use 'I've had a scathingly brilliant idea' from The Trouble with Angels.

I read the msscribe thing too, and had to keep looking away metaphorically. It was hard to believe someone would crave attention so much, and would be so willing to hurt people.

Yeah. I tend to shy away from Big Drama people, and this is a reminder of why.

I know what you mean about msscribe. I read it with my mouth hanging open, because suddenly so much of the random stuff that I'd occasionally hear coming out of HP fandom *made sense*. It left me feeling quite wretched. I think the fallout and shock waves are going to be reverberating around all of fandom for a long time to come.

Also, yay for fun brainstorming! What times are good for you? My schedule is scatty, so if you give me a vague idea of what works for you I can try to fit in with that. Email me if you don't want to post it publicly.

*hugs*

Best time for me is after 9 pm PDT, which is 17 hours behind Sydney (I don't remember exactly where you are). But I'm pretty flexible, and can carve out an hour here or there, because I'm self-employed.

I just glanced at the story briefly, but omg, Why do people do that? Of course, this is from the woman who pretends to be a famous actor in a RPG, but, still... *boggles*

I'm on the fence when it comes to Blackadder - I love the second and third series, but I don't much care for the fourth. I think the first is awful. But this movie idea sounds promising. I don't imagine we'll see it for quite a while, tho, if it happens at all.

RPGs are explicitly games. RPS is explicitly fiction. That's sanity. Making up socks to fangirl oneself? Not so sane.

All Blackadder was uneven for me, but the medievalist in me loves some of the first-season jokes. Still, such good stuff.

I so need a "cunning plan" icon.

Yeah, lost four hours of my life reading the whole saga and even if only a quarter of it is true, it's still highlights the worst aspects of fandom. What freaked me out so much was (a) the vitriol of some of the posts excerpted (and I'm not even talking about msscribe's posts); and (b) the rampaging egos (see (a)). No where did I see mention of whether people were writing decent material (with the excpetion of allusions to Cassie Claire's material, who, interestlingy enough, I knew through the VSD). It was all about THEM. Nothing about the words, the stories, what new and interesting things they were contributing to fandom. Nope. MEMEMEMEMEMEME. And can we say that again. I've brushed my teeth about a hundred times since I've read it and my mouth still feels brackish. Ugh.

I checked out the journals of some people I know to be real persons and friends of msscribe, and they're still staunchly behind her, saying that all of this is a dirty lie. Which is interesting, because there are at least four people who I think to be entierly sane and reasonable, and it's just neither to say that 100% of this is a lie.

I was an internet "friend" of hers for a while, and I thought she was terribly cavilier about revealing personal information about herself, especially after she was (proportedly) stalked by someone who had figured out where she lived. References to her work, her husband, the graphics hosting she had through her work, etc, would have made it fairly easy for me to track her down if I'd seen the need and I pointed that out to her-- even after having been persecuted she shrugged it off, and then a few weeks later came the episode where she lost her job (proportedly.)

I left the HP fandom just out of boredom, but I was around during most of this. I didn't know her in RL though, so I never saw the need to try to figure out whether or not she was telling the truth about a lot of stuff. I must say though, that if pottersginny and fermatojam were sock puppets, they worked beautifully.

The whole thing makes me sad. I like to trust people. But I've locked my personal posts, so at least they're not out there for everyone to see.
