Via lilithlotr, an interesting and slightly revealing Sean Bean interview. He admits he doesn't want to watch his kid playing football ("like watching paint dry" -- I agree) and that his dad owned the machine shop and had a Rolls. For RPS writers: he mentions he and Elijah and Orlando were in NY on Sept. 11, and had to go back to England on the QEII, but gives no other interesting details.

LiveJournal is starting something called Loyalty Userpics. At least one permanent user I know now has 132 icons, but I only have 100 though I've paid since I started three years ago. Presumably it's not fully implemented yet.

In other news: salad engineering at a pizza hut salad bar.

And argh, taking the kidlet to the library wore me out, but I'm finally getting over it.

So that's why I have 132 icon slots now.

Amusingly enough, as soon as I noticed, I couldn't muster of any sort of great icons to fill the space. MAN.

*amused*

Someone linked to it without explaining it, and so of course I had to track it down and figure out what was up. Figured I'd post so as not to waste anyone else's time!

I really appreciate your posting it. I would never have thought to look in the FAQ. I did look at News and LJBiz, but there was nothing there.

Another perm user at 132 spaces. I wonder if someone did the math of how many you could earn if you'd been paying since LJ had paid accounts? I mean, five per 12 months paid, 32 would be 5.5 years worth of payments. When did LJ start offering paid accounts?

Am I the only person who is intimidated by all the icon slots? 15 was perfect! I could remember which was which and even do themes! 132 is ... I can't take all this pressure! *head essplodes*

Disclaimer: That was my sarcastic voice. I'm not actually upset about it.

It's not fair! I was offline when the perm accounts were offered! *pouts*

I'm sorry! They'll probably do it again eventually (unless someone realized that the people who buy perm accounts are the ones that would stay consistantly paid anyway and they're losing money longterm on it).

And that's why they should add more payable features.

Hrm. Payable features that perm account holders would have to pay for as well? Cause I can see the riots that would cause. "Waaaaaah, I have a permanent account, I should get a pony everything for free up to and including blowjobs from Brad." And if it's just more paid features, sooner or later paid account holders are going to hit breaking point unless LJ does something clever (almost typed 'cleaver', but I think that would be homicide and LJ would get in trouble for that) like having a bundled paid account to induce people to buy all the bells and whistles -- say, buy a one year paid account, add-on userpics, extra storage space and the [insert new paid feature] all at one go and get $5 knocked off (personally, I'm betting most people don't use the full 10 gig, so I don't think LJ would take too big a hit cost wise, even assuming they would still allow the $5 off the paid membership for automatic renewals).

Yes, that perm account holders should pay for, too. Like, buying more icon space. You don't HAVE to, but if you want it, you should. It's only fair, since we suck suck suck and never give back.

I like that packaged idea. That's good, too. I just meant little extras, like icons or space or something.

That makes sense. I mean, if GJ can give a bazillion icons, obviously LJ can tweak it as well, so if you're perm and you really can't survive on a mere 132 icons, you can drop an extra $X for 500 or 1000. Likewise for paid account holders, though LJ would have to decide if they would have to pay for the 100 and then the super icon status, or just skip straight to the super status. That could get brain hurty fast.

I always thought it would be nifty to have a couple of special paid journal styles. You know, if they had an utterly awesome style, any paid/perm user could drop, say, $6/year to be able to use it, but I'm not sure how they'd manage not to have someone lift it and then people just 'create' it as a custom style. Hrm.

And I think the packaged thing would make financial sense for the same reason some of the insane hosting packages do. I mean, sure, Dreamhost offers 20gb/storage and 1tb/bandwidth for $7.95/month, but most people probably don't use anywhere near that. So LJ makes a 'super paid' or 'paid+' bundle of paid account/100 userpics/10gb storage *commercial voiceover style* a $59 dollar value for only $54, but wait! If you get automatic renewals, it's only $49!

They probably won't be any more of a system drain as a paid user than they were as a free user, all 100 userpic slots may or may not be filled, and they probably won't ever approach the 10gb on storage (for the love of pete, I'm not even using an entire megabit of my storage space). And then LJ gets almost as much money from these paid+ users every two years as they would from the sale of a single perm account. It would be diabolical.

Mmm, capitalism. It tastes good on toast.

It would be awesome and about a million times better than the whole adds thing that they want to put into effect.

Eh, I never browse without logging in (too many flocked friends), so I won't see them, and I can't see many of the people I socialise with on LJ using it if my habits should change, so... I'm not overly worried about it. I know, I know, community and suchlike. I have to deal with "one company, one team" all day long; community can go fuck itself with a splintered baseball bat.

Excuse my spelling, by the way. I seem to have lost my brain.

I just don't like the idea that LJ has ads. It just rubs me the wrong way -- but not wrong enough to actually complain to them, so ... I don't know.

I'm a permanent user and I have 132 icon slots. God only knows what I'm going to do with it. I had problems filling 50, and in fact, have 51 now, which is a minor victory for me. x__x

Pff, and I'm still on six. :P
It would take me forever to make, let alone use, 132.

Thanks for the Bean link. Scruffy sex god that man.

And if your kidlet is anything like my uncle's kidlets, you have my utter sympathy. *shudder*

My uncle's kids are teh kayoot, but so energetic and my god, so strong! The eldest is three but she's the size of a five year old and she can forcibly drag my gran around. One day she decided I was her horse and she wanted rides. I'm not the strongest of people and she's heavy! That's why I always say I love kids so long as I can give them back! Children have waaay too much energy.

You know, this kinda sounds like LJ has the capability of giving people unlimited User Pics like some other blog sites, but has discovered it can use it as a bribe to make us keep dropping cash.

I feel like I should have a bit of scathing anti-corporate machine soapbox time, but I want 132 icons as much as the next happily swiping cardholder omg.

For RPS writers: he mentions he and Elijah and Orlando were in NY on Sept. 11...

Is it wrong that I'm going 'oh, god, I wish he hadn't told fandom that' and anticipating the badfic?

Perm user: 132 slots.
User who's had a paid account since 2002: 100 slots.

(Not that I'm anywhere near capacity on either of 'em! I do wish icon space was transferable)

Thanks for the Bean link, that's a great interview. Bean wasn't a particular favourite of mine when the LotR films first came out, but over time he's become a serious crush. *sigh*
