LJ adding optional advertising level

For those who want features but don't want to pay for them, an ad supported level. Like Google ads on other blogs. Apparently, paid users (when logged in) will never see them. Free users will not see them on their pages or friends-pages, but will see them on the pages of accounts which opt in to ads.

The thing I'm most worried about is ads on private or friends-locked posts. While the account will have to opt-in to ads, some application will have to go through and figure out what the post is "about" so as to provide ads on related topics. Of course, anything on the internet is not really private, but this makes it worse. I've asked but not yet received an answer about this.

I'm feeling all old-fogey-ish. *shakes cane*

When the third level becomes available for communities, it will be interesting to see which way the mods/maintainers jump.

Yeah. That would be so annoying to free users. What features would possibly be worth it?

personally, i cannot wait to see what ads are offered on most of the friendslocked posts i have access to. i mean, are there really enough lube manufacturers to support that kind of ad space?

Heh! I leave those public!

I don't get lube ads in gmail -- a fair number of ones offering to alleviate my back pain though.

it's possible to have ads not rely on searching the contents of a post before appearing, you know? I know it seems terribly old-fashioned and almost backwards now, but seriously. It could be that locked posts don't egt to be ad-supported at all; it could be that the topics advertised are chosen by ticking boxes once on an ad-setting apge and have nothing to do with machine-reading the actual posts... many possible solutions.

*waits to see*

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. Someone said maybe based on interest, which would be basically ok.

Yeah, I wonder who will feel the need for the features so much that they will accept ads. I mostly ignore the ones in gmail except to laugh.
