Recs: mostly AUs, mostly WIPS, all worth reading!

Est!Dom & est!Elijah - my favorite pair in The Establishment RPG This universe is halfway between collaborative writing and more traditional role-playing, and I've been reading it basically since it started. The setup is that there's a private club where many celebrities and rich people can have kinky sex (including lots of BDSM) without publicity. This is far enough from reality that I consider it an AU.

There are other great people in this game (and I'll rec some of them next time) but these two are extraordinary, both the kink and just their character development. Sometimes I have to remind myself that this is not real, that Dom never said that and Elijah never did that in our mundane world. I'm such a fangirl that I've become friends with both authors and now write est!Billy as well, so assume I'm horribly biased. Read in chronological order from the Master list, and post feedback and questions at tripping_watch.

WestTRiPS (by abundantlyqueer, azrhiaz, blythely, chevauchee, lazlet, shaenie, sparcck, and the_drifter, set in the Old West, 1881, some NC-17 for sex & violence). The universe centers on Orlando's life, but there are other stories too, all fascinating with flawed and amazing characters in dramatic situations. Also blazingly hot sex (slash and het both). The stories are posted out of of order, which works so very well because there's a strong underlying arc, and the writing is fantastic.

LOTR University Long, wonderful, and very very sexy stories set in a shared universe in which Billy is a Professor of Philosophy, Dom is a troubled student majoring in German, Cate is a Professor of Biology, and Elijah and Orlando are classmates of Dom's. The rocky development of the Billy/Dom relationship is full of angst and happiness, sex and companionship and deep love. I've been reading this for over a year and adore it: the writing is beautifully detailed, dialog wonderful, sex incredibly hot, and the characters entirely sympathetic.

LOTR University alternate reality, Part 1 and Part 2. What would have happened if they'd met after student!Dom had dropped out of uni and professor!Billy had lost his ideals. It starts angsty but is currently hopeful. (This is the half AU, because it's based on the other one).

Spartacus (Complete) (by serpentisfix aka lord_alexander; AU; Dom, etc., NC-17) Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9.
The summary says it best: The Spinal Tappesque disappearence of Agony Aunts on the webzine The Spartacus means that Dom has to write the column instead - something that happens with frightening regularity to the amusement of his colleagues. But who is the mysterious Editor? Why is Sean Bean addicted to MMPORGS? What would happen if someone stole a pen off Sean Astin? Can Lij not speak in 1337? And why, the ultimate question, is Billy so frigging hot?
I recommend reading this in parts, it's long and funny and sexy: the combination can be overwhelming all at once.

Phone Tig (complete; Dom/Billy, by apple_pi and lord_alexander, NC-17). The boys as phone sex workers, what a job for them! UST at first and then hot hot wonderful smut. Funny, sexy and very very satisfying.

Separation of Desire (by chaosmanor, Viggo/Orlando, set in modern LA, NC-17). For links, see her fic index and scroll down to the series. Orlando's a prostitute and Viggo's a failed actor / brothel receptionist. It's a relatively realistic view of the sex industry, complete with laundry, ex-wives and STD tests. chaosmanor's Orlando/Viggo stories are always extraordinarily good, and the characters in this series are enormously sympathetic and affecting. Plus: hot sex and top!Orli!

Dílse (by berreh, Billy/Dom, much of LOTR cast by name, up to hard R). Set in 1922 Dublin, where most of the characters are Irish Republicans and Billy is a spy for the British government. It's very much a WIP and there's no actual slash yet (for those of you looking for smut), but the story is great, the characters really work, the history and setting is full of lovely details, the angst is believable and the whole thing compelling.

Chalk Butterfly (by cynical_terror, Orlando/Viggo, NC-17 overall). Set in modern New York City; Orlando, Elijah and Liv work in a library (Orlando doing Story Hour! darling!); Viggo is a high-powered restauranteur. Orlando has a terrible skin condition that keeps him in pain a lot, and makes him shy, but Viggo is determined to get to know him. The medical stuff is a big part of the story, but done deftly and without excess angst. There's enough realistic character and situation development, plus hot wanking with hints of more to come, that it's quite addictive.

Revelations (by hystericalblond and deleerium Orlando/Stuart Townsend, AU set in modern Manhattan, NC-17) Part 1; Part 2. Orlando is an angel and Stuart Townsend is a demon, it's really better than it sounds I am not generally interested of fic involving any kind of religious imagery, but this one works. They've got good strong sympathetic voices, the plot is brisk, and the smut is hot.

The generic "some" recommendation is (are?) all the AUs by abundantlyqueer - Mardi Gras, Sniper Sight, Off the Ropes, The Templar, Na Goshi...
An utterly amazing writer, stories full of fabulous details and telling images, situations that sound impossible and yet are completely fascinating (she has me reading boxing!fic, and liking it!). Wonderful, sparkling dialog, incredibly likable (and lick-able) characters -- mainly Elijah/Orlando but many others too -- and fabulous intense wonderful sex. I'm a huge fangirl, and love almost every one of her stories.

Oh wow. This is an amazing rec list. Some I know very well (Est!Dom and Est!Lij), some I have heard of but never quite figured out where they were (LOTR University and WestTrip), and some I have never heard about at all (Spartacus). You are wonderful to pull all this together for us. *gives you a great big smoochie!*

I'm still relatively new and parochial in fandom. One of the Things I Do is rec -- it makes me feel all cuddly.

<3 so much. Thank you. Our little story has exploded, and sometimes we're shocked by how much people have invested in it, even though we know how much we've invested in it. Does that make sense? *flail* Thank you so, so much. *squish*

I've been a fan of it since the uni had a different name. Something about the form and the people gives it a lovely depth and texture.
