End Times: a kind of series

Nothing's ever obvious, in mirabile_dictu's stories, nothing's laid out in black and white, it's all fascinating shades of grey. In this series, she reminds us that choosing one path means losing another, and that even the best, fullest lives must end. "Geriatric passion" she calls it. These stories, set in multiple possible futures, are wrenching but comforting at the same time.
  1. Long Wait (Billy, Dom, mention of Andy) - "If this isn't happily ever after," Dom whispered, shivering with delight, "then I want to know what is."

  2. Long Expected (Sean Bean, Orlando, offstage Viggo) - "Soph said I'd need someone; she knew I couldn't be alone. And she knew I loved you. Love you.

  3. Long Silence: (John Rhys Davies, Viggo) - "My entire life should have been devoted to art, as yours has been.

  4. Last Wish (Orlando, Sean Astin, spirit of Elijah) - "That was from Elijah." Sean tried to roll away, but Orlando held him down. "As is this."

  5. Last Breath (Dom, Elijah, memories of Billy) - "Apology accepted," Dom said briskly. Maybe if he accepted the apology Elijah would go. That would be nice. Back to listening to the cottonwood tree. A more pleasant way to spend his afternoons he hadn't yet found.

  6. Farewell (Elijah, memories of Sean Astin) - "Friends for life, yeah? And a little bit longer."

  7. The Fellowship of the Ring (memories of Billy and Dom and glimpses of others) - In New Zealand many years in the future, remembering and telling stories of their actor grandparents. - She turned to stare again at the luminescent image of the two men, standing in sunlight nearly a hundred years old while a stream that had long since splashed into the sea foamed around them. "They were beautiful," she said.

I helped convince Mirabile to post these, and oh I am so glad

Me, too! You remember how freaked I was about this series. I'm so glad you liked them, and delighted that you liked them enough to recommend them to others, given their tone and topic.

Thank you, thank you, and a great big hug.

PS: I must again credit empress_wu with that wonderful phrase "geriatric passion" that I shamelessly stole from her beta of one of the stories.
