Troy is fairly good

mood: content
music: thunder and rain outside the hotel

I give it a B, with extra points for attractive shirtless actors. I could spend a lot of time watching teh pretteh.

It's late, I'm tired, I'll just randomly blather.

Taking out the whole Golden Apple thing made Paris look incredibly dumb and Hector not much better in the beginning. But they are sooooo pretty!

Orlando plays a beautiful gormless dork really well. Diane Kruger played Helen as a similar character, no depth in either one.

Sean's Odysseus is wise and rueful and wonderful. All the supporting actors were fine, made the material look good.

Eric Bana's Hector is too good to be true. He's smart, he's a good fighter, tactician, the perfect husband, father, son, brother... If he weren't such a good actor, the character would be insufferable.

Brad Pitt's Achilles tries to be more complex, but he's not the world's greatest actor, and he looks like such a surfer that it's hard for me to suspend disbelief. Also his accent slipped a bit too often. Good fight scenes. To de-gay the story, they added a love story between the Trojan princess-priestess Briseus and Achilles, which I didn't mind too much. But they made Patrocles into Achilles' cousin instead of lover, so it was weird when Achilles went crazy when Patrocles was killed. It took most of the power out of that story.

The dialog was mostly OK, very few truly stupid lines. A bit too much repetition of the "people will remember this for thousands of years" bit.

Sets, costumes, ships, castles, all that stuff looked good to me, but I'm not a classicist. The music was only occasionally annoying (I'm picky) and the drums during the big battle scene were effective. So was the horse, it was pretty cool.

Am I glad I saw it? You betcha, though being with my girlies and having cyclogenesis clutching my hand during the tense scenes was the best part by far!

ETA: my business appointment and afternoon workshop went well too ;-)

I am so glad you are having a good time and hanging out with slashers. Say hi to all of them for me, k? And I am really glad to hear that the professional stuff went well. And now I have to admit to a "face palm" moment...I was reading your review and when I got to the comment about the horse, I was all confused for a moment and sat there just going "Horse? What horse?" Am stupid. Am embarrassed.

<3 you too!

I forgot the horse at first wasn't a big deal in the course of the film.
