things english speakers know, but don’t know we know.

WOAH WHAT?

Really, I had never noticed that before!  I guess all the reading as a kid made e understand it, Surprising small new unexpected English language information…  But linguists have!  Big bad modifier order post at Language Log

Well, that one made me laugh, because they're right. I've never noticed it before, but it is something that every English speaker does regardless of education level or where they're from. It's "little black book" and "Big Yellow Taxi." It's a brand new, bright red convertible, because a bright red convertible that's brand new just sounds weird.

As I was growing up in Chicago, I heard other poor black kids who'd likely never set foot in Harvard (or maybe any college) calling each other "ugly little bitch" or "stupid-ass little motherfucker." It was always "ugly little," not little ugly, or little stupid. I don't know how, but it's a rule that gets ingrained in all of us.

My Indonesian translator friend was surprised that we never learned the modifier rules explicitly
