No Justice, No Peace

There was a mainly peaceful protest about Ferguson, etc. Some violent splinter groups broke some windows during a mainly peaceful demo, so the Berkeley Police decided to teargas the entire area. Including all the usual students on a Saturday night before finals week, a couple of hundred elderly people who’d been to a concert down the street, and us. My daughter was crying and I can still feel the gas it in my throat after a large glass of juice and a tea with honey.

We like to think our town is better than that. There has to be another way.

How awful. :( They just seem to chuck that horrible stuff around like air-freshener now.

What are peaceful protesters supposed to do, anyway? Just stay home? Makes me want to go to protests (with teargas protection ready).

I wish that peaceful protests could really be peaceful and that there didn't always have to be those people who wanted to turn things violent. Not that tear-gassing an entire area is the most sensible or safest way to deal with a few violent protestors...

Exactly, and it makes me admire Gandhi and MLK and principled Non-Violence all the more.

Oh my god, I'm so sorry you experienced that. Jesus. What is this world coming to?

Then last night the police held back and lost control and there was breaking of bank windows, fires in trash cans, and looting of Whole Foods (which is an arrogant capitalist corporation, but still).

Tonight the center held and it was relatively peaceful for quite a long time, the worst they did was shut down the freeway. I do feel for the people stuck in transit. But less violence is good.

Well, the next night the violent ones broke bank windows and looted a Whole Foods. Then the next night after that, they were peaceful but blocked the giant freeway, and I feel sorry for all the people just driving home. I have no idea what's going to happen today.

This is my concern in Seattle. We've had peaceful demos pretty much every night, but we do have a few assholes, & the cops are really focused on protecting *~holiday shopping~*. I'm definitely more concerned about the cops. I'm so sorry that happened to you guys.

Well, Sunday night the assholes ran riot (literally) and then Monday they were peaceful but blocked the freeway and train tracks. I just do not know.

This is so disturbing. If your place isn't sensible, there isn't much hope for the rest of the country.

I am really sorry.

I hope you and your daughter are okay. I hate that they made her cry.

We are OK, she's more interested in that she has tomorrow of as a Storm Day.

In the interests of fair play, the police just basically panicked and they backed way off the next days. I hope the small businesses that got trashed had riot insurance, and worry about the cost to them going forward. Whole Foods makes a mint around here, I'm not worried about the.
