ways to work around LJ's failed 'improvements'

« previous entry | next entry »

So. In trying to fix some code, LJ screwed up their most basic functionality. People report they can't load pages, can't view comments, can't reply, can't preview comments (particularly bad for kinkmeme anon posting), can't find their icons, and have bad physical responses to the awful new colors.

Worse, some people are reporting that their automatic payments have been turned on for them without their consent. check your account status and make sure it doesn't say it's automatic!

There are some workarounds: if you type ?style=mine at the end of an LJ URL, it will show in your custom layout (the one you see when you go to your own journal). If your layout uses the S2 style system (almost all new ones do), you can avoid the ugly and disturbing new interface, get a text dropdown icon menu, see comment subject lines and even preview your comments (for the moment).

How to do this automatically: paid and plus [extra advertising] accounts:
Go to: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=display

Other Journals [X] View all journals and communities in my own style
Comment Pages [X] View comment pages from my Friends page in my own style

A pretty good FAQ on changing the these settings
basic accounts
?style=mine - basic accounts can use this Greasemonkey script in Firefox to insert it on every LJ page

historychick49 notes: if you don't have a paid/permanent account, you can't check "View all journals and communities in my own style". However, LJ Hook for Firefox and Livejournal Extension for Chrome allow you that option.

And here's a Greasemonkey script for an alternate preview button: http://soph.livejournal.com/227512.html

(it might be worth sidegrading to a Plus account and installing AdBlock Plus so you don't have to see the awful ads)

Here is some more info: : Workarounds for LJ users, how to make the LJ style Minimalism look like the old comment style, even fail_fandomanon has a custom style to make long threads work properly,

Community Moderators: how to enable custom comment styles for your users - plus avoid spam sequestration

Go to http://www.livejournal.com/customize/options.bml and Work As your community.

"Disable customized comment pages for your journal" NO

set this to No so people can view it the way they want to! (this doesn't apply to communities with S1 layouts)

while you are at it, go to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy (and change to your community) and disable the newish setting that silently quarantines comments LJ thinks might be spam. Without notifying the moderators or the poster. Horrid.

Uncheck this: Spam Protection Comments and messages from users identified as potential spammers will be marked as spam and moved to a special section.

(I recommend showing CAPTCHA, tracking IP addresses, and screening anonymous posts. I get a couple of spam comments a week for a dozen communities, it's not that big a deal).

Some thoughts about how LJ screwed this up so very badly
LiveJournal is making money in various ways, mostly advertising and being the small-business marketplace for Singapore, according to an December 22 article in a California newspaper.

igrick (Ilya Dronov) is the new Chief Development Officer for LiveJournal. New managers tend to want to make great changes, but he goes way too far. A native Russian speaker has translated some of his most annoying statements and insults to users, his September 2011 plans for LJ There are also Translation and links to new design for LJ by Artemiy Lebedev (tema), studio ArtLebedev.

And a little product management rant:

I'm sure the old S1 style system was a crufty mess that was awful to maintain and caused huge server loads at times.

The wrong solution was what they did: rewrite S1 and then release it with inadequate internal and beta testing.

The right solution is to create a new system, call it S3, roll it out slowly, fix bugs for six months, and then start changing defaults.

I don't think so, they are talking about fixing up the MInimalist s1 to bring comment titles back, but not all s1 styles :-(

I use S1 so I guess all of the above is out of the question for me...? I do view all pages 'in my own style'.

I am really wondering: is the above more bother, or is moving lock, stock and barrel over to DW more bother?

Am now completely creeped out after reading factionary's post about the lack of integrity of LJ staff. I think I need to fiddle a bit more with my DW account and consider this crossposting thing in the future.

I'm not convinced that those are all cases were real privacy invasions, but certainly LJ staff is not hugely ethical.

Cross-posting is so easy that I do it almost all the time, it's painless.

Oh my lord, thank you for the heads-up about the automatic payment thing! I had to go and change that for all of my accounts.

That would have been really good, maybe even combined with a real usability study and then a beta test.
