pop culture references in Doctor Who "Impossible Astronaut"?

mood: curious

I did understand Mrs. Robinson, and I liked River Song's character here a lot.

I got tons of Richard Nixon references because a) my parents were peace activists, so I hated Nixon, and b) I spent one summer glued to the televised Watergate Hearings. For those who don't know, tape recordings of Nixon's conversations proved how corrupt he was on many levels, including using the CIA and FBI as political operatives. He looks too nice in this episode!

But bet there are a tons of aliens and X Files references that I'm completely missing. The big headed large-eyed aliens are apparently known to alien-believers as Greys? "They are out there" comes from XFiles?

What else, I'm curious

If I'm remembering correctly, I think the reports from Roswell had aliens that could take away your memories, and with a fair physical resemblance to the guys in this episode. But it's been quite a while since I was at the Roswell museum, so take that with a grain of salt.

The aliens are called the Silence - see here. I didn't notice any references particularly, but then I'm pretty hopeless on picking up things like that! (The X-files catchphrase was "The truth is out there" rather than "They are out there".)

I laughed out loud when I saw the tape recorder spinning and the child's voice talking about monsters in the Oval Office-- because I'm thinking the implication is that there's a good reason for the famous missing tapes.

I think the show does an interesting job presenting him as a character, but mainly through other characters' eyes. All we know about him from this episode is that he's president, he tape records all his phone conversations, and he's discomforted by these strange phone calls that come to him no matter where he is. The mentions of Watergate and Vietnam "and some good things, too" are all from River Song, who is rebutted by Eleven. She could have mentioned that he's known for Watergate and China, which, by the time River is contemporary might be true. It's hard to say what someone's lasting legacy is going to be when they're boiled down to 2 sentences by the vastness of time.

I thought it was interesting that they chose to put Rolling in the Deep as the background music in the diner. It could just be that I don't recall well, but I don't think there's been truly contemporary-to-the-viewer music in NewWho. I could be totally totally wrong though. (I am wrong, I just googled it and Brittney Spears' Toxic appears in the second Nine ep, and I Can't Decide by the Scissor Sisters was in The Last of the Time Lords. And original series Who was chock full of the Beatles.)

Still, for some reason, it threw me a bit.

Oh the 17 minute gap, that would be cool!

Watergate and Vietnam sounds about right to me. I think China would have happened anyway but we could have left Vietnam a lot earlier. Amd, partly related to Vietnam, Watergate was so pathetic and corrupt that it really left a stain on the whole country.

Hi, in this journal I mostly write about media fandom, including completely untrue erotic fanfiction about my favorite actors (for more info see http://fanlore.org/wiki/LotRiPS ). So whatever algorithm you are using for finding shared interests, I think it's not working.
