I am a happy American (also GIP)

mood: hopeful

  1. First day in office, President Obama (oh how I love typing that) put limits on lobbyists, and froze the salaries of staff making more than $100k a year (New York Times).

  2. They have good taste in computers: The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos. (Washington Post)

  3. I'm not much of a gamer, but the US Democracy Server : Patch Day post cracked me up! (gacked from kntb )

  4. (late) A commitment to closing Guantanamo. What a pathetic legal fiction, where only the honor of military lawyers and judges kept us from running Stalinist show trials. What a horror that was. POW status would have been much more appropriate.

in foot news: ow ow ow ow ow.

:-D I like that he's aware enough to be self-mocking and idealistic enough to kinda mean it.

It's a good start to the new administration.

Without wanting to defend Guantanamo or the things that went on there, the detainees did not actually meet the criteria for POWs under the Geneva Convention (see here for the criteria). However, it was within President Bush's powers to direct that they should be treated as if they were POWs, and he did not do so.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. One of my arguments has always been that if the tables were turned and our troops were captured, how should they be treated? Whatever goes around will come around, and by using the international conventions, we put ourselves in far better position to hold other countries accountable.

Well, at least that's mostly over with.
