A (male) + B (white) = SAME OLD THING.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Time for a real change, dammit.

Yeah, it's not that I don't like young, but older actors have more life experience and know how show it. And he's supposed to be an ageless timelord...

I feel the same way. I think it's SG 90210 and Merlin and Avatar and the recent election and my age and the many discussions of race, much on LJ -- just everything building to make the revelation of the new doctor incredibly underwhelming and disappointing, even though I don't know the new guy at all.

It really is time for a change.

I'd have loved someone with some kind of twist, something different. Because pretty white boys have owned the limelight for so long.

Exactly. I mean, I don't know this guy and I'm willing to believe that he's a good actor and that he'll do a good job, and his season(s) will be fun to watch, etc. But with all the rumors about a Black doctor, or a woman, or whatever, I was expecting something different. I got the impression that I was intended to expect something different. And now I'm wondering whether all the rumors were just some kind of publicity stunt, to mess with us and stir up talk. :/

If so, I think it's going to backfire on them badly. And if not, then their publicity staff is amazingly inept IMO, not to have foreseen the kind of backlash they'd get after waving those other possibilities around and then picking another white guy.

[sigh]

Who knows if they even meant to wave possibilities, but this is the 21st century, for crying out loud.

Yeah, I am really surprised. I'll watch it and I'll try to give the guy a chance, but this is really disappointing.

It was a surprisingly un-adventurous choice, and I'm not very hopeful.

oh, I really did not want a woman, not at all :) I would've liked Patterson Joseph, though. This new guy is very, very young and a little bland; but I'm really hoping he'll be great, as long as his hair doesn't overwhelm his acting. At least it's not James Nesbitt, so I can carry on watching!

Young and bland, that's what I'm worried about.

I don't even watch the show, but that is disappointing. The new guy just looks so blah and white bread. You know who I would watch this show for? Chiwetel Ejiofor. Mmmm.

Chiwetel would have been great, he's an amazing actor. But I can live with Matt, too.

*shrugs* I just wanted a good actor to be the next doctor, and he might be that - we'll find out in 2010.

I am quite surpised though how so many people complain about him being young...maybe young is the new black/gay/whatever???

Especially since he's only 3 years younger than Peter Davidson was when he took over the reigns. People are acting like he's 18 and fresh off the bus... *sighs*

I can't wait to see what Matt and Steven do together...I have a feeling great things are in store for us.

I consider myself a forward thinking girl but I personally think a female Doctor would be a COMPLETE disaster. A female Master? Yes that would be amazing but a female Doctor just...no?

I don't know much about Matt and I plan to keep it that way -- he's apparently a good actor who is a fan of the show and has a great respect for it and he's working under Steven Moffat who is amazing and also has a great respect for the show and its history. I can't think of a better combination.

Given the history of race and gender issues of the show, I'm sad that they didn't take the opportunity to change the focus.

Why would a female Doctor be a bad thing? I'm really curious, because it seems perfectly OK to me.

Different day, same shit.

Also, people going on about how he's younger than they are kinda make me laugh a little. Yeah, welcome to our world. :)

I think the only word that can apply is ... bland. Where's the quirkiness? where is the edge? Where is the delightful crustiness that was the hallmark of all the old doctors? *sigh*

It's just, the history of it all, and how hard it would be to follow DT. Sigh.

Hmmm: tall, skinny, funny hair, mobile face, white, male. I think it's Russell Davies self-insertion if not complete Gary Stu. Sigh.
