Dr. Horrible: the songs were really good

« previous entry | next entry »

mood: ambivalent

The lyrics are clever, the music works (though Neil Patrick Harris can sing a whole lot better than Nathan Fillion), the story is unoriginal but nicely done, and the whole thing is very very male. The woman was only there for the protagonist & antagonist to fight over, and die by accident, dammit.

They did do an excellent job of balancing sympathies: as soon as Dr. Horrible seemed to be sweet, he'd do something kinda horrible; as soon as The Hammer seemed like a total jerk, he'd do something kinda nice. I think that was the best part. If only Joss Whedon could have extended that kind of twist on expectations to Penny.

I was going to say, "what if someone made an action story with a woman as the protagonist?" but they did and that was Buffy, and it was a pop culture hit, why not more?

ETA: http://www.drhorrible.com/, free until 12 midnight (probably Pacific daylight time, GMT -7). After that it will still be available from iTunes for $2 each.

I guess one couldn't expect more for a pre-financed internet thing. In case this get's a sequel (and I think that will be the case) they have the perfect set up for it. Not-so-bad villain is in love with a woman. They at least become friends, she never realizes he's in love with her. His nemesis becomes the womans boyfriend. They fight over evil. Evil looses and in the process the woman he loves. Which makes him go even more evil (hence the red coat at the end). I really think that's as good as it get's for setting up a storyline.

Oh it fits the whole superhero/villain pattern, it's just that I expected more from Joss "Buffy" Whedon. Something in which the woman is not a complete trophy. The two men could have been fighting over a stray dog, and it wouldn't have changed the story very much. Sigh.

Or they could have been fighting over an actual trophy, which -- oops! -- gets smashed as they each tug the opposite handle.

Penny was worse than useless. Please.

You're right... they didn't give her much more than a trophy role. Considering the circumstances, I thought they did a rather good job at getting the story on the way. And if they would continue it, I'm sure they would use her death as some kind of traumatic, pushing over the edge kind of way for the hero and develop another woman character that is more rounded... like they had on Buffy.

I was expecting Penny to go to Dr. Horrible's aid in the end showing that she wasn't all good either. I was disappointed when just died. But for me? That's typical Whedon. He just almost gets me there, finishes off himself, and then rolls over to go to sleep leaving me completely unfulfilled ;D

I wanted her to be the head of the Evil League of Evil, or something, or a least a member. Or SOMETHING! Your analogy is sadly appropriate.

sigh. yeah. I thought the songs in part three were excellent, and I loved the dark ending (nobody gets redeemed) but seriously. Penny just faints about and has Captain Hammer take away her purpose in life and gets fought over and dies tragically in a refrigerator so that Horrible can have angst. It's not what I was hoping for.

I was lamenting this in another forum, and someone said, "But Joss did Buffy!" which made me really upset. Like, I loved Buffy! But it's not an all-passes misogyny-immunity card, you know? Joss, you HAVE TO KEEP TRYING.

I am so with you here. Buffy is a good start, but it's NOT ENOUGH.

I know. *sigh* I kept waiting for Penny to do something in Act III, and then everything fell flat. Oh, Joss. *frownyface*

It's a made for the web superhero/villain musical by Joss Whedon, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. Definitely worth watching, and it will only be free for at max 8 more hours: http://www.drhorrible.com/
