new Basic Account is more like Plus Lite
LJ management is offering to restart Basic Accounts. But they want people to see the ads (particularly annoying for communities). And I'm pretty sure will apply to all Basic accounts, even ones that were made before the changeover. their "proposals":.

Proposal 1: Advertising would be displayed to visitors who are not logged in to LiveJournal at the time when they are looking at Basic Account journals and communities.

Proposal 2: Advertising would be displayed to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing application pages - pages which are not part of a community, a user's journal, profile or friends page (e.g. Update page, Edit Entries page, Manage Tags page).

Proposal 3a: Advertising would be shown to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing a journal which they have not friended or community they are not watching (e.g. if you friend a Basic journal, you do not see advertising; mutual friending is not required to avoid advertising).

Proposal 3b: Advertising would be shown to logged-in Basic Account users when viewing a journal of which they are not a mutual friend or a community of which they are not a member (e.g. if you friend a journal and they do not friend you, or if you watch a community but are not a member, you will see advertising; if you do become mutual friends or a member of a community, then you will no longer see advertising in that journal or community).
Thrilling.

I dutifully cross-post, but people rarely comment over there :-(

One thing puzzles me. They say: "We are not proposing to show advertising to Basic Account users when they view their own journals (including their profile and friends page)" and yet they will show advertising on the update page, the tags page, and the edit entry page. How are those any less 'my journal' than the profile page? I thought they'd always made the argument that the profile page wasn't mine? Is it now sort of mine? In the case of my fic draft journal, I don't give a damn about the profile page but I'd sure as hell be annoyed to see adverts on the update and edit pages which I use constantly.

I was one of the few people who had no problem with the removal of the Basic Account. I'm going to be awfully miffed if their 'solution' is to penalise established users in order to mollify new users.

I think they make a distinction between journal content pages and journal function pages.

Yes, I see that, but isn't the profile page also a function page of sorts?

Doesn't matter. If they make this retroactive then I'll move my fic drafts elsewhere.

Apparently it is too much for some people to understand that there really are people who don't want to see ads on their journals or anywhere near them. OR they understand just fine but don't care. Which is more likely than not.

I suppose their attitude is that anyone who hates ads should pay. But there has to be a better way!

When are they going to figure out that the more advertising they throw at people, the more people are going to install Adblock, block up all the ads and be done with it?

It's interesting, I've never seen an LJ ad after the first day they were rolled out, but on IJ I haven't even blocked the ads on my own journal. It's all about the business ethos. All about.

Yeah, right now the Basic ads are unobtrusive, but I can tell it's going to get worse. And to say they're bringing Basic back is truly misleading, because it's Plus Lite.
