LiveJournal/SUP: without a clue

mood: annoyed

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, (attributed to Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein and lots of other people). Is the insane one LJ continuing to screw up, or us continuing to give them money?

LJ staff posted a fauxpology today. It said nearly nothing, and was not exactly reassuring. Is good that they've noticed we're upset. But getting the "right tone when communicating" is not nearly as important as NOT DOING STUPID STUFF. (Kudos to j_crew_guy for the term "fauxpology". )

Joke's on us, they posted at 8pm (Pacific Daylight Time) -- and no staff has even tried to answer comments.

stewardess has summarized LiveJournal's greatest customer service disasters, going back to April 2005, in Nostalgia: 6A/SUP's Greatest Fuck-Ups.

So far, the no_lj_ads community has found three LJ Advisory Board members who say they were not formally asked for advice, and when the topic of killing Basic accounts was mentioned in passing, they said it was a dumb idea. They are: Brad Fitzpatrick, Esther Dyson and danah boyd,

Here's the best (or at least the snarkiest) response yet to the killing off of Basic account creation, (found via princessofg ).

More tomorrow, including my thinky thoughts about the LJ business model.

Crossposted to msilverstar.insanejournal.com, as always.

Great links, especially Stewardess's summary of epic fails.

I have a fair number of close friends on IJ only, so it's easier for me to move towards that side of the fence.

But I have even more friends on LJ, so I can't leave yet.

So I'm straddling the fence here.

Excellent points, all of these. I hope we don't lose our safe place. The Well, after being sold a few times, found a home with Salon that's been reasonably successful.

My best hope is that OTW or some other fan-friendly system with fabulous new features comes out. Not holding my breath though.

I want to say first that you have an absolute right to your opinion. I am not saying that you don't. But what I don't understand is why are people wasting so much energy on being mad? It seems so simple to me ... if you don't like the way a company does business, don't support them. You have an IJ, I know; why not move there? It'd be less stress all around.

Again, you have every right to your opinion. Just I've seen it around and I don't understand it.

I don't want to leave my friends, that's the reason. I've spent far too much time on LJ in the five years to just walk away.

Oh, and I meant to add that I have a fairly deep background in the tech world, which gives me some perspective. I worked for one public company that had wayyyyy too much stock out, and another that lost $93 million in one year way before dot-com bust. And I've been online in communities one way or another since about 1988, starting with dialin BBSs. I want to explain what I see to friends and casual readers, because it's been useful to others in the past.
