From now on, it's see ads on LJ, or pay up

As of NOW: Basic Account is an option available to accounts which were created before March 12, 2008. No account created after this date can be turned into a Basic Account. Basic Accounts will not have any advertising displayed on their accounts, but will have fewer benefits and features.

The official statement is buried at: FAQ #38 Did they announce this in news? lj_2008? lj_releases? Nooooo they did not. This was discovered by the folks at no_lj_ads!

And "Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal" says it was to make the registration process "easier for new users to understand" To which I say, Apparently they think their users are STUPID. The new ones for needing it "easier" and the old ones for taking that crap.

ETA: No one asked Brad. And he's on the LJ Advisory Board -- that was the whole point of the advisory board!

I suppose it's telling that I'm neither surprised that they made the change nor that they didn't tell us it was going to happen. Or even that it already had.

i literally just renewed my paid account (which i feel kind of nauseous about) 30 seconds before you posted this. ugh, they suck - not that i didn't already know this.

SIGH. i wish i wasn't so... dependent and greedy (mostly i renewed for the icons). =\

I renewed last week, for the icons too, and felt weird. Notice I didn't post anything about it. I wouldn't do it now, because they really think we're that stupid :-(

wait, so you can only make a new account if it's paid or plus, which has advertisements on it. is that right?

Yep, those are the only choices now. And if you make a paid account and then stop paying, you go down to Plus, rather than Basic.

But anyone who had any account before today can go down to Basic.

Honestly, I don't much care about what they did, but the way they did it was just so idiotic once again. I just lost my shit a bit in response to Jason "you are dumb but we are trying to help" Shellen.

I do not give a damn what Brad says either way. I think he is a gigantic tool.

I think that what they did sucked. How they did it sucked big rocks. Jason "Foot In Mouth" Shellen is a world-class rock-sucker.

Your response was sharp and good!

I've got to say, the stupidity inherent in this particular move is stunning. It's almost beautiful. At least, I assume it'd be pretty comely if you could scrape all the ads off it to see underneath. I guess the idea that free accounts = content that paid accounts read just didn't occur to them.

I love the quote "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." (Attributed to Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein and lots of other people). By that measure, LJ/SUP are nuts.

I know that people are leaving lj and their accounts are getting deleted, would it be possible to clean up the accounts and then give them to someone who wants a Basic account?

I think it may be too weird to have a recently active account show up with a new person behind it in the same fandom. But some of the never-much-used ones, maybe. I have about seven of those...

I'm with you on that it was a bad bad thing that they didn't announce it, or whether or not the Advisory Board had any say in it.

However, I'm not surprised about their move to not offer basic accounts any more. And I mean it seriously, not ironically. I know it's an old cliche, but they are a business and as such, their first goal is to make money. I'm perfectly all right with that, and I don't think that "but ten years ago when LJ started, Brad promised there won't be any ads" argument is valid. The circumstances are different now, and LJ is different than ten years ago. So there, my opinion :).

But still, the sneaky way they did that is dead wrong.

What they did was not great -- they should have worked through more of the implications before announcing the decision. But apparently almost all the new accounts have been coming in as Plus, because it's been the default. So they aren't gaining much, and they are destroying their credibility. Dumb.

How they did it was sleazy and annoying -- treat us like children, we're likely to react like children. Though most of the responses I read were not cat macros, so doing better this time than before.

They just don't get it, which is a bad sign for future decisions.

I'm glad I don't pay for this service any longer. And yes, I have Plus accounts, since I do have a certain greed for icons. But a nice Ad Blocker can always work with that. *g*

I think most of us stay because there simply isn't a better option out there. This is where the readers are, and they're just not motivated enough to leave. The owners will continue to treat us like idiots and anger us, we'll complain, but I don't see things changing much beyond that . . .

unless they get rid of free accounts altogether. Then lookout, mass exodus.

I wish I'd not renewed. I don't like supporting a company that thinks we're quite that stupid. And I'm going to be cross-posting to IJ in communities as well as personal journal, because I'm so damned annoyed.

I'm sort of waiting for the day Brad takes his own code and restarts a new LJ the way he ran it before. It won't happen, but seriously, why the hell be an Advisory board member when you can be CEO? You don't wanna deal with the shitwork, that's why you hire people to do it for you.

And hey, that code's open source, its not like they could stop him. Bwahaha.

Brad's working for Google on social networking stuff, the OpenID thing is his baby, and they're giving it their imprimatur.

I hope OTW or someone comes up with software that's just as good as LJ and has better features, maybe some fandom-specific ones like automatic archiving.

The problem is that our New Russian Overlords don't understand that the non-paying majority creates most of the content that the paying minority is here for. That just doesn't compute to them, so they see the non-paying Basic users as worthless leeches.

And the way I interpreted it is that anyone who currently has a Basic account can keep it, but that if you have a Plus or Paid account you can't downgrade, and if you upgrade your Basic account any time in the future, you won't be able to go back. I might be wrong, though.

That's why they're supposed to have an Advisory Board. But honestly, I think they paid too much for it and are now frantically scrabbling around trying to make money. Sigh.

I'm pretty sure that with older journals, you can go up to Plus or Paid and then down to Basic again. I should try it with one of my miscellaneous journals, and report back.
