Jury Duty

mood: cautiously optimistic

I've been called, will do my civic duty unless they want me on a long trial. I've never served before, either they never got to me or I was very pregnant or something,

But I need advice on how to discreetly write smut, as I've not been getting out much. I guess I'll start using initials for names and the most graphic details, But would appreciate other tips.

I write smut everywhere and anywhere. I just use initials for names, sit with my back to a wall, and rest my notebook on my knees and flip it up to my face.

Interestingly, the only smut I've ever been called on in public was non-fandom. The guy sitting across from me practically fell into my lap to find out what two of my characters were up to.

Sounds like a plan, if my tendonitis will let me. Typing is easier.

I wrote an entire 65 page fic in a notebook at work, all while waiting for meetings to start, or during meetings that were pointless. I wrote very very small so even a person sitting next to me couldn't make it out. Every once in a while someone would ask me what I was doing, and I would say, "Writing a letter." (yeah! writing a letter to my Aunty Smut and Uncle Porno in Slashland!)

Really, really, really small handwriting. Works every time.

We'll see, my tendonitis is getting to me, and the smaller I try to write, the worse it is.

Hmmmm...I personally love hand-writing things, but if that's too painful for you...do you use a laptop? I bring one with me to type rehearsal reports, and if you angle the screen just right, no one else can read what you're writing. Not to mention that by using 8-point font and 50% magnification, there isn't much to see anyway, unless you know what you're looking for. And yeah, initials are a safe way to go. For names, fandom-specific nouns, etc. You can make up your own shorthand. I also tend to simply 'sketch' scenes when I write them in public. Just the dialogue and details that immediately jump out at me. Then I have the framework for the story, and can fill in the rest when I type it up. I haven't lost anything, but I save the real writing for when I have more time and am in the proper mood.

I'll take both notepad and laptop, and try it out. Don't know for sure if I'll be on the jury, or how much downtime we'll have. The defense lawyer is a showboat and the judge is annoyed, so we may have quite a bit while they're discussing things.
