just say no to snap.com

There are some of you on my flist who have the graphic previews (little popup windows) that appear when I hover the mouse cursor over the links. It looks like a little TV icon and links to snap.com -- which you know is tracing all of us for advertising purposes! Please consider turning it OFF. LiveJournal set this up on a per-journal basis, so we can't turn it of globally. To turn it off for everyone viewing your journal, click this link:

http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/

(ETA thanks to estelle and blackbird_song for debugging this)

Scroll down to: the part that says "Graphic previews" and uncheck it.

You can also turn it off for viewing everyone else's journal. I just figured out that anyone with adblock can block "shots.snap.com" and the icon with its giant javascript just goes away. Or go to Firefox Preferences, Content pane, and by "Load images automatically" -- click the "Exceptions" button and add "shots.snap.com" (or just snap.com) with the Block option. All gone!

ETA2 About "snap.com" - The announcement was semi-hidden in a news post We've added a new tool from Snap.com so that you can have visual previews on external links within your journal.

A bunch of javascript fetches a snapshot of the linked page and brings it up as a little windowlet in the browser. This may be why they were so clear that all link targets have to conform to their rules about graphic sexual content. This is a feature (Not).

Yeah, I wouldn't allow that crap on my journal if they paid me. I've permanently blocked snap.com from setting cookies or showing up on my screen.

Just FYI: Clicking on the link takes us to an error message, but copying and pasting it into the address bar, substituting one's username as required, does work properly. I imagine that everyone on LJ (and most likely Botswana) except me figured that out instantly, of course, but I just thought I'd mention it. (I seem to require mockery, today.)

Thanks so much for the link. I hope that everybody disables that obnoxious bug feature.

Uhhh. Clearly I have not been paying enough attention. What is this snap.com business you speak of?

Thank you for the caution! I checked my own profile, and it was already unchecked, but I'd noticed those stupid little boxes popping up and was confused. Now I've just adblocked it too. POOF.

Less is always more for me on a webpage (unless I specifically want a feature), so no previews for me, thank you. (I haven't seen them at all--I think snap.com might be already included in my AdBlock filters, but I added it anyway, just in case.)

Oh good, they defaulted to off for most people but it somehow got turned on on your journal, and I was like wtf is that? I knew you'd never do it on purpose. Which inspired this post.

Thank you. That was most helpful to know. I've blocked cookies and graphics on my browser and turned off the feature in LJ.

I'm confused -- do I need to uncheck the "graphics previews" and do the de-bugging thing?

Uncheck the graphics previews and no one else will see them on your journal.

Do the AdBlock or Firefox block thing, and you won't see them on anyone else's journal.

Graphic previews were already set to "off" - I just checked - and I've blocked images from snap.com. Thanks for the tips!

This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much! I've just followed the instructions - I already had that option unchecked in my settings page - but now I've blocked snap.com.

Why the whole "copy, paste, replace with your username" instead of just posting a link to http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/ without any authas?

Otherwise, a big thanks for the post, I will link to it, when I blog about it.

Any options for those of us who use LJ at work and are stuck sometimes using IE? I've blocked it here at home, but I do not have admin privileges at work to install firefox and do the whole adblock thing.

startoucher says below that there's a tiny close box on the popup preview window itself. And this post: http://spacecowb0y.livejournal.com/281574.html has some stuff for IE users.

Just an addition - on the stupid little preview window itself, there is an option to disable in the upper right-hand corner. It's a bit tricky to navigate, but I did manage it, and that seemed to disable it on my own journal as well.

Oh that's a good tip! However, I suspect the cookie and perhaps the javascript are all still there.
