LJ management asshattery

mood: nauseated

LJ management's clarification helped a bit, but they still have a basic failure to understand how the questions of pornography and obscenity affect fanfiction (especially Harry Potter, duh!). It's becoming ludicrous and forcing me to think seriously about moving off the service. They just don't get it, and that's pathetic, after all this time

  1. There are a lot of grey areas. Actual damaging child pornography is awful and no one wants to support it. Seventeen-and-a-half-year-old romantic sex is not a big deal (IMNSHO). It's the part in between that matters. And they're still extremely unclear about how they plan to draw the line.

  2. LJ spokesaccount burr86 chirps that underage sex fic is OK, as long as it's meaningful: "This is specifically about "I am going to write 2000 words about where he put what body part" sorts of things."

Now I want to write expicit Romeo/Juliet smut. In myddle Englishe. With explicit descriptions of where he put what body part.

  3. They're confusing 'child', 'minor', and 'underage' -- even in the US, there are different laws based on the age of the person involved.

  4. Why do they hide behind vague handwavy "obscenity laws" which are themselves completely unclear? Why not just come out with an LJ rule that's reasonably straightforward banning any posts depicting people who appear to be younger than 14 (or 15 or 18 or whatever) in explicit sexual situations.

  5. How do these rules apply to locked personal and community posts? I'd say far more tolerance, but I always say that.

  6. There should be a standard process when someone is accused of breaking the rules. Posts could be automatically made private while the process continues. LJ Users should be notified and allowed to respond to accusations. Permanent banning should be reserved for egregious cases.

That would be the opposite of what's happened in the last few days, when Several people were unbanned, and others were banned.

I was having a pretty good day before this. Now, the wank just gets me down :-(

You know, I just wanted a nice weekend where I spent minimal time online, read the new Potter, maybe took some naps, and now all I know is that when I get back online, the internet will be on fire, and not just from Potter madness. WONDERFUL.

Yes! Honestly, if they didn't plan it to coincide with Potterdämmurung, there was probably a subconscious knowledge that it might take the edge off thing. Sigh.

Muskrit gives you lovins. And is prepared to do so in graphic, explicit detail in an AU where we're teenagers, if that would help.

I change email addresses periodically, but you can always reach me through my livejournal.com address (I keep that current with whatever email account I'm using at the moment).

It pains me to say that my write is dormant these days, so I don't know how useful I would be as a writing partner...

Leaving aside the porn, what about the president thing? Is that not of equal concern? What about fanfic about killing the president?

As far as I can tell, they think they (or the FBI, no Secret Service) can tell the differnece between a fic about planning to kill the president and and a significant real-world plan to do so. Otherwise John Grisham and a bunch of other thriller-writers are in deep shit.

The stupid shits who actually plan assassinations tend to be pretty obvious, in retrospect at least.

So if you plan to kill the President (and the Vice President, I'd expect), you really ought to use characters who tell each other things. A bit tricky in first person, but can be done by referring to fictional situations -- flying cars are always good for setting it in the future; for the mid-70s, go for Nixon, add in a lot of cigarettes and alcohol and girls in miniskirts and the continued existence of Lawrence Welk. Whee, fun!

They are being appallingly stupid and I want to bitchslap them upside the head. I'm strongly planning to spread my community so I'm not dependent on LJ.

When I posted about it, it was my immediate knee-jerk reaction. Now I feel like I just want to stay the hell away from anything related to this. I'm sure somewhere, someone will write a nice summary for me to read once it's over.

Don't worry, hon. I'll graduate law school and pass the bar and then we can start a class action suit and ream the fuckers. I'll be sure to take an intellectual property law class or two ;-)

Well I expect there will be a lot of work in obscenity and pornography law! And a cheerful cute sex-positive lesbian is a fabulous addition to any team ;-)
