AfterElton.com has a piece on this: Why Hasn't TV's Lost Found Any Gay Characters? including statistical unlikeliness and examples of other shows that have gay characters without losing audience.

You link goes to page 2 of the article, just so ya know.

Also, I thought the producers had said in the past that at least one of the survivors is gay or lesbian, though they never said who. Of the main cast though, from what we've been shown, none of them are gay, though I suppose a case could still be made for bisexual.

All the main ones seem v.v. straight, even Locke's backstory has het romance. Except maybe Mr. Eko.

I remember an interview with either a writer or producer (can't remember who) who said that it wasn't an impossibility, but the one thing they didn't want was to have a "token gay character" like so many other shows. As in they don't want the point of that character to just center heavily around his/her sexuality and make that the spectacle. It's been done and done, and they know people are tired of it as controversial plot device.

I'd like to see how they handle it.

That's all very well and good, but is the alternative to having a token having nothing? A better alternative is to have two gay characters ;-)
