arbitrary recs

music: For Jeffrey

I wish I were more systematic, but here are some of the many good ones out there. Remix recs to come later.

Every single story by childeproof, who writes the best angsty!Sean Bean/wacked!Viggo ever. I got to beta some of her earlier stories and it was a marvelous experience. Her stories, set during principal filming, have an amazing gritty tang of reality, imperfect sex (which I love), dialog that sparkles when appropriate and at other times rushes out all wrong and perfectly human. With great cameos by the cast, especially the smartarse Hobbitpile. Real and funny and sad and frustrating and touching and a twistingly satisfying ending.

Precious Thing (by ingve9; time unknown; Billy/Dom/Viggo; PG-13). I can't believe I never recced this before, it's a story that I can read over and over -- it's the one with the chocolate! (Thanks to esorlehcar for reminding me). I love everything about this: the exotic names and flavors, the atmosphere of warm sensuality, the exquisite use of second-person, the sharing of love and sex... And of course, the players.

Noticing (drabble) (by kyuuketsukirui; Orlando/Dom; set during filming; PG) So much background and slow enlightenment in 100 words. Amazing. (I'm undoubtedly influenced by the fact it was written for me. Consider yourselves disclaimed.)

Ssibaji, 5 parts complete, aka korean_ot3 (by airgiodslv and impasto; set after filming; Elijah/Dom + Orlando; NC-17, D/s). spoiler: I'm a giant fan of imperfect sex, things going pear-shaped, and people having to put things back together. That's a theme through this, all the way to the morning where Elijah gets distracted waking up Dom. The D/s, all the way through, feels less like 'oooo kinky sex' and more of a mutual collision of needs. Gorgeous.

Home From Home (by the_jenmark; set around spring 2005; Ali/Billy/Dom, R). I love that threesome and wish there was more of it.

Snakes (by valerienne; AU, set in LA after filming and Manchester; Dom/Elijah, PG-13). A bonk on the head sends Dom into an alternate reality full of things and people that are almost familiar. Odd premise, but lots of fascinating details and nicely done.

Remember, if you like the stories, please drop a comment. It makes the authors happy.

I found this cool Fanthropology Timeline that starts with 1967 star trek fandom. There's also a text version that starts with King Arthur in 800 CE, but has very little on RPS (yet). Those of you who were here at the start, pls to contribute!

Thank you very much for the rec! The premise, if you were wondering, was because the challenge was meant to be based on the film the 'Family Man' in which a mysterious figure thrusts the protagonist into the life he could have had. I was trying to stay close to that, but couldn't think of a suitable mysterious figure - hence the bonk on the head. Pure deus ex machina, I realise, sorry!

(By the way, were the LA details ok, after all?)

I figured it was something like that, but the story went far beyond the premise, not important. Go you!

I found that timeline totally fascinating (didn't think to on-rec it, sorry, my bad), but was very frustrated at the lack of rps info. I have a ravenous curiosity about it. I suspect we'll have to wait a several more years before there are good resources. :(

I only just joined this community, in an attempt to stave off total marking madness, and almost the first thing I see is this incredibly generous rec from you. Thank you, as ever.

I am a minority taste, now that you mention it. But not for lack of your generous pimping and beta-ing.
